Delicious Honey Pistachio Baklava

This baklava is made with layers of phyllo dough brushed with butter, filled with finely chopped pistachios, and drizzled with a honey syrup. The recipe takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes from start to finish and serves 12 pieces.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Phyllo: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  2. Make the Nut Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped pistachios, walnuts (if using), and cinnamon.
  3. Layer the Phyllo: Place one sheet of phyllo in the prepared dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering 8 sheets, brushing each with butter.
  4. Add the Filling: Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Continue layering 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, followed by another layer of nuts. Repeat until all the nuts are used, finishing with 8 layers of phyllo on top.
  5. Cut the Baklava: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  7. Prepare the Syrup: While the baklava is baking, combine honey, sugar, water, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  8. Soak the Baklava: Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Allow it to cool completely before serving.
